History of the Fund
The Benevolent Fund first came into existence in 1964 as a branch of the National U.K. Fund to provide assistance for people engaged in both the U.K. and Irish grocery markets.

The Irish Grocers Benevolent Fund (IGBF) was founded in 1981 by Mr. Tim Nolan and Mr. Gerry Duffy to specifically provide help and assistance for those in need in the Irish grocery trade.

The Fund is a registered charity (No. 6577) and is also registered under the Friendly Societies Act (No. 1775)

The objective of the Fund is to provide financial relief for necessitous persons who are or have been engaged in the Grocery Trade. This includes retail grocers, wholesalers, manufacturers and suppliers to the trade.

During the past two decades enormous work has been done to relieve hardship amongst members who have fallen on difficult times because of ill health, death in the family or unemployment. The fund continues in its efforts to reach more people in need.

The fund acknowledges the good work done by Tim Nolan and Gerry Duffy since its foundation.
